There was excitement in the Manse the other week and an air of expectancy as I offered to cook our family meal. The reason for the ever so slight raising of an eyebrow by the usual Chef de Cuisine is that I once (only!) had the dubious honour of setting fire to an oven full of Yorkshire puddings! Whilst flames in a gas oven are acceptable, apparently they are not so welcome in an electric one. Fortunately for me and the Manse, on this occasion everything went according to plan much to the relief of Forres and Gordonstoun fire crews who had been on stand-by!.
Food though, has become a passion in the western world, hasn't it?. We've become a nation of 'foodies'. Hardly surprising given the amount of TV celebrity chefs venting their overdone egos on hapless trainees and in language that could flambe a fillet at forty feet! we are approaching the traditional time of Harvest. A time when our churches are filled with fresh fruit and veg and many other symbols of plenty. Yet there are still so many stomachs in the world that are bloated through lack of food! Still there are youngsters, even babes in arms, who are but skin and bone and whose lives are measured in minutes. We shake our heads , but still send our goods to the usual safe places. Perhaps this year we could act on some fo the special appeals for dry goods and life-saving nourishment?
As if we needed reminding! - God bless you and yours. - Duncan.
