news
This is the
churches' news-sheet
for
March 2007
from the manse . . .
"As many mists in March you see, so many frosts in May will be"
Have you noticed whenever we meet up along the way, we aye talk about the weather.
It is, if you'll pardon the pun, an ice-breaker. Well thankfully we havn't had
too much ice to break this winter, but there's always someone who'll say,
"We'll suffer for this yet!". Aye, they do say, "If March comes in like a lion,
it goes out like a lamb"
Unlike so many other nations of the world, we are a nation of avid weather watchers.
Now that's maybe not too surprising in these parts, especially where livelihoods
are so weather dependent either on land or sea. Our Forecasters too have become
celebrities, remember Ian McAllister - an Elder and strong supporter of the Kirk as he is.
Then there was Bert Ford and others who spoke with a sense of authority and gravitas.
Today's 'presenters' of the weather are not all Meteorologists, as once they had to be.
There are various 'performers' and styles, from the Mystic-Meg who mesmerises us with
wafting fingers and encompasses, in a broad sweep, everywhere between Lands End and
Muckle Flugga. Those also whose weathered hands rarely stretch beyond the Watford Gap
and place Scotland somewhere in the region of Luton! Jesus also found himself in the
midst of weather-wise people, amongst whom were those who believed they could forecast
what the future held.
In Matthew 16 Jesus says of them,
"You may be able to discern the face of the sky, but
you cannot interpret the signs of the times"
True isn't it ? We are so often involved in our worldliness, that we fail to read what
is happening around us either in our communities, in our environment and in the ways
of God and His Creation. Until, that is . . . . it's too late!
May God Bless you and keep you.
